At Eumundi Herb Farm we grow our cucumbers with the same care and love we give all our plants. Planted in rich, composted soil under the warm Queensland sun, our cucumbers thrive with natural watering and no harsh chemicals.
Cucumbers love the warm, sunny Queensland weather and grow quickly when given the right conditions. Here are our top tips for a bountiful, crunchy harvest:
Sun & Soil — Choose a spot with full sun (at least 6–8 hours) or light afternoon shade during the hottest months to prevent scorching. Cucumbers thrive in rich, well-drained soil high in organic matter. Add plenty of compost and well-rotted manure before planting, and mound the soil slightly for better drainage.
Support & Spacing — Train vines up a trellis, fence, or sturdy frame. This saves space, keeps fruit clean and off the ground, improves air circulation, and makes harvesting easier. Bush varieties work well in smaller spaces or pots.
Watering — Cucumbers are thirsty! Keep the soil consistently moist (about 2–3cm of water per week, more in hot weather). Water deeply at the base of the plant in the morning to avoid wetting the leaves, which can encourage disease. Irregular watering often leads to bitter fruit. Mulch well with straw or sugar cane mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Feeding — Feed with a balanced organic fertiliser or liquid seaweed once flowering starts. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which produce lots of leaves but fewer fruits.
Pollination — Encourage bees by planting flowers nearby, or hand-pollinate if needed (use a small brush to transfer pollen from male to female flowers).
Harvesting — Pick cucumbers regularly when they’re young and crisp – usually 50–70 days from sowing. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to keep producing. Leave them too long and they become bitter and seedy.
Crisp, sweet, and full of flavour, they’re perfect for fresh salads, pickling, or simply snacking straight from the vine. Seasonal and bursting with that true home-grown taste – just the way nature intended.
